The MotoAmerica Superbike Championship shakes up at Mid-Ohio as Attack Performance Progressive Yamaha Racing’s Bobby Fong scores a stunning Race 1 victory

Attack Performance Progressive Yamaha Racing’s Bobby Fong takes over the points lead with a hard-earned win in the opening race of Round 7 of the MotoAmerica Superbike Championship at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Jake Gagne scored a fourth-place finish despite the hot and greasy track conditions at the 2.4-mile circuit in Lexington, Ohio.

Fong’s top form continued at Mid-Ohio, qualifying second for his fifth front-row start of the season. The Californian grabbed the holeshot in Race 1, but it was red-flagged on the opening lap. In second after the restart, he quickly claimed the lead and tried to build a gap up front. The competition closed in before the halfway mark. Still, Fong kept cool under pressure and continued to manage his race in the slick conditions, ultimately earning the win by an eight-second margin after the competition ran off track on the final lap. His fifth-consecutive victory moved him into the championship lead with an 11-point advantage.

Gagne also showed good pace, qualifying third and getting two good starts to the twice-started race. He slotted into third but dropped back to seventh early on after the restart. The three-time MotoAmerica Superbike Champion regrouped and made his way back to fifth on that hectic opening lap, then engaged in a multi-rider battle. Gagne continued to fight to the finish, advancing to fourth on the final lap when a rider ahead went off track, securing valuable points in the championship and maintaining his position of fourth in the standings.

Attack Performance Progressive Yamaha Racing returns to action tomorrow afternoon for Race 2 of MotoAmerica Superbike Round 7 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

Richard Stanboli – Attack Performance Progressive Yamaha Racing Team Manager
“Our Yamaha R1 proved once again that it is the bike to have in the most challenging conditions. Bobby has adapted well to the Yamaha platform and has been able to use it to its potential.  Five wins in a row at difficult tracks is an awesome accomplishment, and we plan to keep pushing again tomorrow.”

Bobby Fong – Attack Performance Progressive Yamaha Racing #50
“It was a long, hot race. The track was slippery with the heat and a heat cycle on the tires after the red flag. We managed it well at the end of the race and had another good finish today. I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

Jake Gagne – Attack Performance Progressive Yamaha Racing #32
“It was a tough race for me today, but the bike is working well. Hopefully, we can step it up tomorrow for Race 2 and get back in the fight at the front.”
